In summer, children's feet take a beating: hot sand that makes them hop, slippery poolsides, wet changing-room floors. Water shoes (or aqua socks) have become a holiday essential. But you still need to choose them well. Here's everything you need to know to get it right.
Why water shoes for a child?
Three good reasons come up every time:
- Hot sand. In full sun, sand can exceed 50 °C (122 °F) in just a few minutes. For sensitive little feet, that means guaranteed discomfort, even a risk of burns. Water shoes let them walk with ease, even during the hottest hours.
- Slippery surfaces. Around the pool, on a pontoon, or in changing rooms, a non-slip sole prevents many falls.
- Hygiene. In busy, damp environments (pools, shared showers), keeping feet covered limits contact with floors where warts and fungal infections thrive.
The 5 criteria for choosing well
- A flexible, non-slip sole. The ideal: a thin, flexible sole that grips well while keeping that “barefoot” feel. The child keeps their natural footing.
- Breathable, quick-drying fabric. The shoe should be wearable when wet, dry quickly, and not hold onto sand.
- Easy to put on. A pull tab at the back, left/right markers inside: the child puts them on alone, without a meltdown before the swim.
- Lightweight. Ultra-light shoes slip into the beach bag and weigh nothing on little feet.
- The right size. Neither too big (they slide around and hinder walking) nor too tight. When in doubt, rely on our size guide.
What they're really for (and what they're not for)
Thin, flexible water shoes are designed for sand, poolside, boats, smooth surfaces, and the home. Their lightweight sole prioritizes comfort and the barefoot feel. They are not, however, water-hiking shoes: to walk for long stretches over pebbles or rocks, you need a thick, rigid sole, which isn't what they're made for. Their proper use is the sandy beach and the pool.
Which size to choose?
The size should match the child's usual shoe size. Since the shoe hugs the foot, it's best to avoid going a size up “to make them last”: a shoe that's too big slides around and loses its purpose. Refer to our size guide for the right fit.
How to care for them?
Nothing could be simpler: after each outing, a rinse with clean water is enough to remove sand, salt, and chlorine. Let them air-dry in the shade. Well cared for, they last the whole season.
In short: a thin, non-slip sole, breathable fabric, easy to put on, and the right size. That's exactly what Palm Beachies water shoes offer, designed for hot sand and the water's edge, without sacrificing the barefoot feel.
